Ten years is a choice you make weekly.
Solid wood
Dust with a dry soft cloth, wipe spills the day they happen, keep pieces out of direct radiator heat, and feed oiled finishes with food-safe mineral oil twice a year. Wood moves with seasons; a hairline at a joint in January that closes by June is the material breathing, not breaking.
Upholstery
Vacuum weekly with the brush head, rotate and flip loose cushions monthly so they wear evenly, and blot spills instead of rubbing. Performance weaves take mild soap and water.
Wool, rugs and throws
Vacuum without the beater bar, rotate the rug twice a year, and let shed fibers finish shedding, new wool does that for a few weeks. Blot spills with cold water only.
Linen and bedding
Cold or warm wash, never hot, low tumble or line dry, and skip the softener, linen softens itself with every wash.
Brass and metal
Wipe with a dry cloth. Unlacquered brass darkens on purpose; polish it back if you like it bright, or let the patina write the record of the room.
Candles
First burn until the full surface pools, trim the wick to a quarter inch each time, and never leave one burning in an empty room.
